Ontario’s 2024 Canadian Electrical Code Now in Effect, Here’s What You Should Know!
The 2024 Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) offically came into effect in Ontario on May 1st, 2025. While the implementation is complete, it's still important for electrical professionals, contractors, and facility operators to understand the key changes impacting safety, design, and installation packages.
What's News in the 2024 CEC?
The updated code introduces several changes that modernize electrical standards, enhance worker production and support the growth of renewable and energy-efficient technologies.
Key updates include:
- Electric vehicles (Sections 8 and 86): Load calucations were revised and simplified by the deletion of Table 38. New provisions were added permitting the use of Electric Vehicle Energy Management Systems (EVEMS) to monitor and control loads, thereby simplifying demand factor application.
- Health Care (Section 24): Rules 24-104 and 24-106 mandate improvements in basic care areas, including specific requirements for 2-wire circuits in patient care environments (excluding multi-phase equipment) and detailed new rules regarding the minimum size (No. 12 AWG or larger) and material (copper) for bonding conductors and panel bonding.
- Energy Storage (Section 64): Major revisions were implemented, including a new Subsection for residential occupancies and new detailed standards (64-900 series) for the installation and safety of energy storage systems.
- Pool and Spas (Section 68): Key updates were made concerning bonding conductive pool infrastructure (Rule 68-058) and new requirements for the location and function of the disconnecting means (Rule 68-072).
Why it Matters:
Each CEC revision raises the bar for electrical safety and compliance across Canada. Understanding and applying these updates helps ensure that installations meet provinical regulations and industry best practices.
